Getting started with Emotion Coaching
The Hand Model of the Brain
Below Lara explains Dan Siegel’s “Hand Model of the Brain”. It provides an understanding of what is happening in our brain on a biological level when we experience emotions. When we are met with a “flipped lid” we need to stop speaking to the Logical part of the brain and start speaking with the Emotional part instead. This is the heart of Emotion Coaching Parenting.
The Four Parenting Styles
Lara explains below the four main styles of Parenting found in the research. Evidence shows Emotion Coaching Parenting has offered the best results in terms of felt connection with our children, reduced behavioural concerns, and increased emotional intelligence in ourselves and our kids. The best news is that research shows that 30% of the time is enough!
Which parenting style do you see yourself most in?
Connecting with your Teen
As children mature and move into Adolescence, our relationship with them often feels increasingly disconnected, especially when they spend most of their time in their room and only appear to want to be near us when they need things from us. We encourage parents to look out for subtle “bids” for connection, as they still exist with teens (it’s just harder to pick).
