What should I expect in the group?

In “Tuning In” parenting groups, you will be learning a style of parenting called Emotion Coaching. These skills have been proven to assist your children become more resilient, independent and emotionally mature in the process.

Each course runs for two hours each week, over a period of 6 weeks (a total of 12 hours).

Groups will be kept small and have a maximum of 8 parents and be lead with 1 or 2 facilitators. We will discuss child development, normalize expectations of age-appropriate behaviour in our children/teens and will be taught skills of “Emotion Coaching”. You will be practicing these skills throughout the course.

You will get a chance to meet other parents in similar situations, share and learn in a safe and supportive environment

 

What is Emotion Coaching?

There are 5 essential steps to being a good emotion coach

  • Be aware of your child’s emotion

  • Recognize your child’s expression of emotion as a moment for teaching

  • Listen with empathy and validate your child’s feelings

  • Help your child learn to label their emotions with words

  • Set limits when you are helping your child to solve problems or deal with upsetting situations appropriately
